The Silver Comet Trail

Posted by on Sunday, October 17, 2004 (CST)

Biking - 34 miles of biking through west Georgia.

Troop 96 biked for about 35 miles along the Silver Comet Trail in west Georgia.  The Silver Comet trail is akin to the National Rails to Trails idea and is a joy to ride.  It's amazing to be able to ride over a paved or concrete trail for over 30 miles and never worry about oncoming traffic.

Our boys started around lunchtime at the bike shop near Powder Springs.  We rode for a few miles and had lunch close to the Pumpkinvine Trestle.  The tunnel through Surry mountain was an amazing experience, to pedal through on a bicycle. The echos inside were super.  We were able to end our ride in the town of Rockmart.  Rockmart has embraced the trail with parks and pavilions, making it a prime stopping point.

You do have to cross a few roads but traffic is minimal.  Some higher traffic roads have overpasses or underpasses.

We were lucky with no flats, broken chains or mechanical breakdowns on the trail.

You can learn more about the Silver Comet Trail at their website located at http://www.pathfoundation.org.
